Mix # 8 Tracks 7 – 9
Theme: An Ode to My 20’s
7). God and Country - The Thermals
A song that reminds me of the 2004 presidential election. This song is off the Thermals’ album Fuckin A, probably my favorite of theirs. In 2006 they released The Body, The Blood, The Machine, which is also excellent, and takes on a lot more political themes.
8). Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night - The Hold Steady
One of the most fun I’ve ever had at a rock show was seeing the Constantines with the Hold Steady as the opener at the Middle East downstairs in the fall of 2005. Both bands played incredible sets, and I remember the crowd being so energetic and happy and fun. I love every song off Separation Sunday, but I picked this one because a few years later I would visit Chicago with my now husband on our first “big vacation away together”, and we happened to see the Hold Steady while we were in the city. More on that in a later post.
9). Young Lions – Constantines
When it came out I picked up a copy of Shine a Light on CD at the Newbury Comics in Bellingham. I was excited because the guy who rang me up commented that he’d heard good things about the album. I told him I heard it sounded like a combo of Fugazi and Bruce Springsteen and he gave me a puzzled look. I used to love when I occasionally got positive comments about my music purchases from the guys/girls who rang me up at Newbury Comics. It just kinda reaffirmed what I thought was my excellent taste in music. I can tell you I care much less about this now, which is definitely a good thing as I turn 30 this year. Anyway, this entire album is amazing, one of my favorites ever.
